This week’s edition of Redefining Radical comes to you from the salt flats on the border of Nevada and Utah, inspired by a road trip along I-80, made possible by a commitment to cultivating a community of strong, bold, powerful women in the outdoors.
I love a good road trip. I rarely have hours of uninterrupted time, free of emails, Instagram, and Slack messages. Nothing but me and the thoughts rattling around in my brain that seem to work themselves out as I switch between favorite playlists and the far too many half-finished books.
On this particular trip, I…
Finished Heartburn by Nora Ephron. It’s fiction, based on the true story of her husband having an affair while she was pregnant. For those unfamiliar with her, Nora is the mastermind behind the infamous When Harry Met Sally orgasm scene. She was influenced heavily by her mother who once said “Everything is copy,” and those of you who know me know that I have embraced that to the fullest.
Made it through the last remaining chapters of Ali Wong’s Dear Girls. Part of my process of honing my craft of comedy has been to immerse myself in the work of comedians with whom I identify. She’s nasty and I like it.
Wrote a joke that I might go to hell for. I know many of you signed up just for this, so manage your expectations, this is all a work in progress. Warning: If you know you will be offended by a joke about Jesus, DON’T LISTEN TO THIS. If you are upset, remember that IT'S A JOKE and also I'm Jewish so I have a different relationship with Jesus and also you can unsubscribe as MY INBOX IS FULL.
Resurrected a playlist that I hadn’t listened to in months and it reminded me of a time this past year when I was at the pinnacle of happiness.
Beat myself up about all the things I recently haven’t done or didn’t do well. And then I reminded myself that in the last year, I actually accomplished some really big things. I’m quite proud of them because I didn’t know if I could actually pull them off. That palpable imposter syndrome hung over me as we transformed drywall and concrete into a beautiful brick-and-mortar store that is yet another extension of our values of supporting women-owned businesses and independent outdoor brands that make the outdoors more inclusive. I helped facilitate trips to Japan, Kenya, and Mt. Bachelor, resulting in new friendships and reinvigorating a sense of purpose and meaning in people’s lives.
Drove into the sunset and felt immense gratitude for being alive another day to witness its beauty.
