I made a commitment to myself that if I was going to become a writer, then I needed to write every day. It’s been really hard to do that recently. The world is so heavy that I feel neither clever nor creative. Work—my businesses— have felt unusually difficult, which says a lot. Boys annoy me. My mind is swirling.
So I’ve been writing a lot more for myself, in my journal, in one of the 826 notes I have started on my phone (who sees me on this?). Lots of half-finished, half-started jokes, stories, and lists that I may or may not ever get to.
You’d think that I’d have something to share with you here today. But I don’t.
Well maybe. You tell me.
Every day, I try to write down at least one thing that makes me happy or laugh or brings me joy. I thought I’d try something new this week for Redefining Radical: Sharing that list of things that filled the cracks of what felt like a broken, but not destroyed, week.
I bought a pair of second-hand Rag and Bone brown penny loafers (that I’m going to put Kenyan coins in) and a double-breasted brown plaid coat after stumbling across this Instagram account. I’m obsessed.
I was so tired that I contemplated monogamy. (There’s a joke in this somewhere.)
I’ll take front-row seats for this any day.
The number of people calling each other Chef after I started calling them chef is one of my greatest accomplishments.
Coalition Snow won the Small But Mighty Award at the EDAWN Existing Industry Awards. It’s a good thing they didn’t give us a mic for that acceptance speech they didn’t ask us to make.
Discovering this business in Palestine and hearing from the owner that my email asking to carry her goods in our shop Far Out put a smile on her face.
This book will soon join my stack and I’m excited to work through it and share what I learn with you.
Tweaked this recipe so that it consisted of fried baby potatoes, fried halloumi, and zhoug. Because fried potatoes with fried cheese is clearly superior.
Camping with dear friends. Thank you for the lovely time, chefs.
People who love gays.
Leaning in heavy to my grandma vibes in three different Zoom meetings on Wednesday. The look might now be a thing.
If you don’t jot down things that make you happy or are grateful for, I highly suggest it as a daily practice. I certainly haven’t perfected the routine, but when I do it, it feels good. And sometimes that’s all we need to wake up and do it all over again.
